Alana Hunt is a registered psychotherapist and Canadian certified counsellor with a background in suicide intervention training. For years, she practiced as a lawyer at top tier law firms in Toronto and London (England) and financial institutions in London and New York. In 2010, she began a series of changes with life-altering impact that continue today as she transitioned from practicing law to practicing psychotherapy, counselling and suicide intervention training.
Alana provides both counselling and psychotherapy. You may begin with a focused problem and then decide you would like to go deeper with psychotherapy. Or you may start deep, realize you aren’t quite ready for that, and then move into counselling. Or maybe we will blend the two from time to time, depending on what you need. Either way, we will work to develop a collaborative, empathetic and therapeutic relationship with you in a safe space. This will help you feel free to say and do whatever you need as you learn to more fully engage in life again.
Sometimes you don't know what's wrong ... you just know something is wrong. Behaviours and thoughts that were helpful may have become unhelpful and harmful. Maybe you are tired of feeling unlovable, disconnected, incompetent, alone, anxious or depressed. You may be living with a problem. But you are not the problem. Alana believes change is about building forward momentum, one step at a time, to tackle a challenge … much like climbing a mountain where you have gear and the unknown ahead of you. There is only so much planning you can do when facing the unknown. If you have help tackling that challenge in safety - like a guide or an anchor - even when you find yourself on shaky ground and are facing insecure footholds, deep crevasses and maybe difficulty breathing, you can find yourself on the other side of that challenge. That doesn’t mean it is easy to head down the mountain into the valley with the memories of everything you learned on the upward journey. In fact, those memories may fade – your skills, knowledge, resources and capabilities may slip from your mind. Alana will help you tackle your challenges in a safe, collaborative, empathetic and respectful environment. This helps give you the space you need to work towards exploring and deepening those skills, knowledge, resources and capabilities - so you can learn how to get on the other side of your challenges.
When you can’t make it into the office, we can speak by phone or video using a service like Skype that is geared towards mental health professionals and their clients.
Alana currently practices at Fallingbrook Wellness Clinic at 1204 Kingston Road at Victoria Park Avenue in the Beach community of Toronto and at 80 Carlton Street at Church Street near College Subway Station in downtown Toronto. Paid parking is available and both buildings are wheelchair accessible. Free one hour parking is usually available near the Fallingbrook Wellness Clinic.
