Marleen is the founder of Private Matters Psychotherapy based in Burlington, ON. Originally from The Netherlands, she spent her childhood and teen years in Ivory Coast (West Africa), Jeddah (Saudi-Arabia), and Cairo (Egypt). Being brought up in diverse cultures with different languages, she was taught at a very young age to respect the cultural and individual differences of people. This is one aspect she likes to integrate into her therapy sessions; she offers a non-judgemental and respecting attitude towards all her clients.
Her academic career started at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and two Master of Science degrees in Psychology: Clinical Psychology and Cognitive Psychology. From there her career took her all over the world; starting with a housing project for people with mental illnesses in The Netherlands, then working with mentally ill offenders in a forensic psychiatric facility, and from there working as a trauma counselor for the United Nations in Haiti.
After spending some time in Haiti working for the United Nations, she settled down in Canada. She has worked for a diverse range of psychological and counselling agencies before deciding to start a private practice in Psychotherapy. She specializes in using a combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness Relaxation Techniques in her sessions. She helps individuals who experience stress and discomfort due to anxiety, a traumatic experience and depression gain a better understanding of what they are going through. Her specialization is working with Emergency Response Workers (such as paramedics, police officers, fire fighters and ER personnel) and family members of suicide victims in learning to cope with and understand their trauma.
