  • Shyamala has spent nearly a decade working closely with individuals; couples & families, helping them achieve their personal goals and work towards healthier relationships. She is a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist (Ontario Association for Marriage & Family Therapy and American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy), with both a Masters and Doctoral degree, specializing in Counselling. With a commitment to ongoing professional development, she is in the process of becoming an AAMFT Approved Supervisor as well as an EFT Certified Therapist.

    Her professional background includes non-profit work, educational and medical settings. Working from a systems perspective, her practice includes narrative therapy, emotionally-focused therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy. These models have been found to be some of the most effective in creating and sustaining long-term change.

    As a former fitness instructor, she has a passion for physical wellness as well as emotional wellness. With an approach that is sensitive and down to earth, Shyamala brings authenticity and energy to her work with people of all cultures and backgrounds.

    Shyamala is part of the rehabilitation team on Discovery Channel’s national TV show, Canada’s Worst Driver. While at the rehabilitation centre, she provides one-on-one counselling to the participants on issues that impair their driving such as anxiety, panic attacks, anger, low self-esteem and relational distress. In aiding them gain the skills required to keep their calm and maintain their focus, she assists the rest of the panel in deciding their readiness to drive on public roads. In addition to a regular appearance on Canada’s Worst Driver, Shyamala is often sought out from local media sources as an industry expert.

    Shyamala has played a vital role as a consultant for educational institutions, medical offices, naturopathic doctors, parishes and community agencies. She has worked closely with Pickering College (York Region Private School) providing one-on-one counselling for students and their parents, designing and delivering group programming specific to student needs, and consulting with administration on issues such as bullying, self esteem, dating/relationships, and inclusivity. She is well known for her collaborative approach and extensive knowledge of the social services system.
